!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

An M-sport, black on black E38, with a 6 speed from an E39. Asking $12,000 CAD. I’m gonna vote NP just because Transporter. I know it’s the wrong engine, but this is as close as you’re gonna get without building one yourself.

NP if what they say is true about the cooling system and timing chain guides. Also, throw in the (fake) Porsche 356 in the background.

Hmm, this is dream car material for me right there, not too sure about it being np at that price though.

It isn’t cheap, but I’ve seen similar m-sport 740i’s with autos go for 9k-11k

I would maybe buy it before trying to fuck it, but who knows what the current owner is into

Mildly CP, but someone will buy it at that price.

It has shadowline trim and sunshades (if they work), overall crack pipe with m62tu.

Leaning towards CP, but if I had a PPI and they said it was solid I might pay it. Everybody’s favorite 7 + Msport + Manual...

$9,300 USD for a manual 740 M-Sport? WITH NEW TIMING CHAIN GUIDES!?!

160k on the car, 100k on the engine - pretty low considering its age.

How is this not NP?

It certainly looks like a great car, but an E38 for 12 grand, even with a 6-speed, sounds a bit expensive. Also, as someone who used to own an E38, I don’t think a manual would fit the characteristics of the car. Its still a cruiser. The E39 is the one to get with a manual.

He calls it an 740i M-Sport, but it doesn’t have the M-Sport Tri spoke steering wheel. They could have even taken the steering wheel from the e39 they used as a donor for the trans too, but they didnt’. Curious what the VIN is.

Did the E38s get the 3 spoke wheel? I thought they just got the sport seats and black trim, but I couid be wrong

It is a cruiser, but it does handle extremely well for its size. I could see it being a lot of fun for what it is. That said, you can get auto ones for much less all day long, and the auto in these is not a bad trans at all. Much cheaper ones certainly wouldn't be M-Sport, however. A friend of mine who used to have an auto 740i now has a 6 speed 540i instead, and loves it

Oh damn I was too distracted by the transmission and didn’t notice it was a ‘99....this would be more ideal if it were a 97 or early 98 I think was the last non-vanos M62. Not a fan of the shadowline?

Shadowline is ok early 98 would be last of the non-vanos m62. Easy way to tell is to look at the MAF connector if it’s round its non-vanos, oval-rectangular its a vanos engine. Usually in ads you can see the engine bay.

As an e38 owner and aficionado of sorts, I must proclaim CP on this one despite the fact that it might actually cost more to replicate, depending on the example you begin with.

I’m eyeballing a 99 sport in the same area right now, guides, suspension, cooling system done, auto, they’re asking half the price.

I could literally buy a manual craigslist 540, swap the transmissions for about $600 in labor at any transmission shop, swap associated components as necessary, buy or fab whatever else, sell the 540, and still come in at under 12k.

For 12k canadian I want either a well sorted 6 speed, supercharged 740i sport, or an absolutely perfect 750iL. Or a Genuine e38 Alpina... but good luck on that.

And seriously, who does a manual swap and the timing chain guides and then IMMEDIATELY sells one of these?

It’s like the super hot / awesome / badass girl with the manual 930 911 DD you’ve always been chasing finally telling you she likes you back, and then you deciding you’d rather date the Mary Kay mom driving the pink Cadillac (SRX, not the hot mom up the street with the pink ‘59 Coupe De Ville convertible that Elvis gave her).

This makes no sense.

Just because it’s only had the engine done in the last 5000kms doesn’t mean it just happened. There’s a very good chance this isn’t their daily, and maybe only got driven on sundays or something like that. It also didn’t mention the transmission swap happening at the same time as the engine swap

You wouldn’t ever get any of those around here for 12k....a solid, fairly low mileage m-sport is already 9k-11k, either you’ve found a really great deal with one for 6k, or it’s rebuilt or something else. I believe the transmission swap isn’t that simple either. You need the computers from the E39, and there was more to it that I can’t remember now, it’s been a while since I researched this much. Regardless, getting the drivetrains and computer systems to cooperate after switching their transmissions could wind up being a real headache. I get wanting to start from scratch for peace of mind though, and know it was done right.

The D2 S8 might be the best compromise between both. Its sportier/lighter than the E38, comes with a (very rare) 6-speed manual and is just as luxurious/spacious. But even there I am not sure of the 5-speed tiptronic might fit a bit better.

I’m not sure to be honest, I don’t know a ton about the e38.
